NOTE: Roughly 2 months after Serene was laid to rest after her fateful “accident”, her loss is still mourned by us all - human and animal alike.
I recently received a series of photos from Cherie which I believe speak volumes of the connection animals have with each other.... Arlene

November 8, 2011... Lunar stood guard all night like a lonely sentry over Serene's fallen body. In the morning, a digger grader was hired to bury her remains. Despite the noise of the grader, Lunar refused to leave his friend...

Lunar stayed beside his friend as the grader gently picked her up to take her to a suitable place for burial.

Lunar would not leave her and followed the digger grader as it lifted Serene up and carried her to her graveside....

Faithfulness never ends....

It took half an hour for the digger grader to dig Serene's grave. All the rescued horses gathered around lunar and watched quietly as the machine prepared to bury their friend....

Promise stepped forward despite the noisy machine to gently nuzzle and inspect Serene's body

The herd followed Promise's example and gathered closely to pay their respects to Serene... each one approached her body and gently nuzzled and licked her while Lunar stood quietly observing them from the back...

The herd's final farewell...

After Serene was buried....the herd filed slowly away. However, Lunar stood for hours staring into empty space with his head down.

Later that evening little Angel who has always been Lunar's protégée, came to stand beside him. She gently snuggled into his shoulder and as he turned to acknowledge her quiet presence, I wept many buckets of tears.

Two months later, Lunar spends time alone which he never did before. I try to give him extra attention - have ridden him into the forests, take him treats of apples or carrots. He looks out for me all the time. Lately I have noticed that he is spending more time with Angel than he did before - he is eating well and feels lively and happy when ever I ride him.....I think he thrives on the attention.
I have no doubt that he is lonely for the first time in his life and I wish I could find a friend for him who could begin to mean to him what Serene did. They were true soul mates.
Serene's loss is deeply felt by us all. She was an exceptionally gentle loving, kind and completely honest horse. Despite her abusive past she never once hurt any human or another horse. She did nothing to deserve the cruel blow that ended her precious life on this earth. Her gentle kind and forgiving personality was her only downfall as she freely allowed whoever hurt her to approach her with evil intention. As she stood quietly for her abuser she would not have anticipated the malicious blow that was dealt to her.
God alone knows who is responsible for the cruelty meted out to both Cresta and Serene ~ in time we hope they will receive just punishment for what they have done.....
Meantime we are quietly continuing to do what we can to meet the needs of the animals in the rural area surrounding this farm.
Please remember us in your thoughts and prayers.....
Cherie
